Matthew Browning is a researcher specializing in plasma astrophysics, computational fluid dynamics, and stellar astronomy. His work focuses particularly on convection and magnetism in stars, as most stars possess magnetic fields in their interiors that likely influence nearly every stage of stellar evolution. Much of his research employs three-dimensional simulations of magnetized fluids, though he has also contributed to observational studies of stellar rotation and activity.
Before joining the University of Exeter as a Lecturer in 2011, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) in Toronto and an NSF postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley (concurrently at the University of Chicago). He completed his doctoral research with Juri Toomre at JILA, University of Colorado in Boulder.
