Andrew Steele is an astrobiologist and microbiologist whose research focuses on detecting life in early Earth and extraterrestrial samples. He earned a B.S. in Microbiology and Biochemistry from the University of Central Lancashire (1992) and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the University of Portsmouth (1996). His work centers on developing robust criteria and analytical techniques to distinguish biological from non-biological signatures, particularly in samples from Mars and other Solar System bodies. He has contributed to major space missions, including instruments on NASA’s Curiosity and Perseverance rovers, and has played a key role in advancing life-detection methods through interdisciplinary laboratory and field research.
