Michael Manga is a geoscientist and professor of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He studies geological processes involving fluids—such as volcanoes, groundwater, geysers, and the effects of earthquakes—as well as similar phenomena on other planets. He earned a BSc in geophysics from McGill University, as well as an MSc in engineering sciences and a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University. He has held prestigious positions, including Miller Fellow, and has received numerous honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship and election to the National Academy of Sciences. His research combines theoretical, experimental, and observational approaches to understand the functioning of the Earth and other planetary bodies.
